How important is insurance?
Insurance is one of those things that when you need it, you really need it. Consider the importance of auto insurance, especially major repairs. Having the right insurance can save you thousands.
In other cases, like buying a new car and making payments on it, insurance is mandatory. Another example is buying a home in a flood zone, insurance is again mandatory. In both cases, it protects your investment.
What insurance is right for me?
Not all insurance plans or insurance companies are created equally. A financially savvy person shops around to find the right insurance coverage for their financial journey. You want insurance that meets all required minimums, whether mandatory or self-imposed, and is affordable.
What is an insurance deductible?
Another major factor in finding the right insurance is the deductible.
An insurance deductible is an agreed-upon amount that an insured person must pay before insurance kicks in. This isn’t the same as your monthly payment (also called a premium). Instead, it only applies when you make an insurance claim.
A general rule of thumb is that the lower the deductible, the higher your monthly payments, and the higher the deductible, the lower your monthly payments. Although this comparison isn’t always as direct as it may seem. For example, increasing your deductible by 5% doesn’t automatically mean your monthly payment will be 5% lower.
Typically, deductibles are assessed on an annual basis.
Here’s an example of how a deductible works. If you have an insurance policy with a $1,000 deductible and make a $10,000 claim, you’ll pay $1,000 and then insurance kicks in to pay the rest.
How long do I need insurance?
Insurance isn’t always mandatory. That said, getting the peace of mind that you’ll at least be compensated should the unexpected happen is always worth a reasonable cost. While you may not always need insurance, a savvy shopper knows they should always have some form of insurance, whether it’s on a collector’s item, a paid-off car, or life and health insurance. It’s very much a situation where it’s better to be safe.
